THE DOE
As I mentioned before I spent a week in Hungry Horse, Montana, leading worship at a summer camp there. I can’t fit into words how refreshed I felt there, spending time in His presence every morning and spending time with His kids every day.
I can distinctly remember one morning I was leading worship, something I usually do with my eyes closed, and I looked out at the congregation of young people. God’s beloved. I saw on their faces a look of utter serenity as they literally felt the presence of Jesus in the room. Stunning.
I say all of that to paint for you the head space I was in when I took this photo. I was walking through the woods with a couple friends when one of the girls spotted this deer from a distance. So I quickly swapped my lenses and started walking towards it. I got a couple shots, but nothing I hadn’t taken before and then the doe ran off.
We continued down the path and I was praying silently that we would see the doe again. Some might see that as a petty request, but I know that my Father cares about the desires of my heart. As we came around a bend in the trail there she was, and with a friend. The two deer were just staring at me, everything at a stand still. I took a step forward and instead of running off as I’m so accustomed to deer doing, they just began to eat, almost inviting me to come closer. So I did. I spent about forty-five minutes following the two does into the forest, sometimes as close as ten feet. All the while I marveled at the beauty of these two creatures and the craftsmanship of their creator.
"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, ’Where is your God?’ These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One[d] with shouts of joy and praise among the festive throng.” - Psalm 42
